But, most exciting of all were the words she wrote to go with the image below: “And finally, what I’m working on now. Well, a bit of setting from what I’m working on now.” A dark woods? And a road that leads right into…??? Looks like the perfect setting for a creepy plot.

Since the events of HOURGLASS, Kaleb and Ava have developed a tentative friendship. When Kaleb goes to the gatehouse where Ava lives alone and tells her the news, a coffee mug across the room jumps and slams into the wall, breaking into pieces. Her fear convinces him to ask her to move into the main house of the Hourglass. After a serious conversation, she agrees.
Kaleb receives a phone call from Emerson, asking him to meet her and Michael at Murphy’s Law.
At Murphy’s Law, Emerson tells Kaleb she thought she had an answer to finding Jack, but that it wasn’t an option. When Emerson becomes upset, Kaleb leaves her and Michael alone and goes to the counter to order. He sees Tiger Girl, the girl he offended at the masquerade, and hurries back to the table to leave. Before he can escape, Emerson introduces him to her best friend, Lily (aka Tiger Girl).
Kaleb tries to talk to Lily, but only ends up embarrassing himself further.
Emerson and Kaleb discuss secrets – one that she’s keeping from Kaleb, and the fact that Emerson never told Michael that Kaleb can take emotional pain away from people by channeling it into himself. Em makes Kaleb promise to talk to Michael about it. While they’re talking a rip forms around them, and this time it’s an entire crowd of people lined up for the GONE WITH THE WIND premiere in the 1940’s. Emerson worries because she’s always been able to interact with rips, and this time they don’t see her. She makes the rip go away and tells Kaleb she needs to talk to his dad.
After Emerson and Michael leave, Kaleb’s father comes to his room to ask him if he’s been taking the medication that helps him control the influx of emotions he feels from other people. He also tells Kaleb he’s noticed a change in their relationship. When Liam tries to bring up Kaleb’s mom, who’s been in a coma for almost a year, Kaleb becomes defensive and angry.
Emerson’s brother and his wife have purchased a house on property that adjoins the Hourglass (also Kaleb’s house). Kaleb agrees to help them move in, and when he arrives at the Cole’s house, Lily Garcia is also there. Kaleb overhears an argument between Lily and Emerson and discovers Lily is a human radar detector – she can find people and things – but that she’s been forbidden to use the ability by her grandmother. Both Kaleb and Lily want to use her ability to find Jack Landers, but Emerson disagrees. She doesn’t want to put Lily’s life in jepeoardy, especially since Emerson thinks Jack could’ve put Lily in her path on purpose. When Lily discovers that Emerson hasn’t told her the whole truth, she and Kaleb have a private conversation.
Kaleb explains the ultimatum to Lily – that the Hourglass has to find Jack Landers or suffer the consequences of time being rewound, and everyone’s lives being reset. If this happens, Emerson could end up in a mental hospital, and Kaleb’s dad would be dead.
They’re interrupted by a rip of a man being hanged. Lily can see it, but Thomas and Dru can’t.
Kaleb stands in line for the Halloween Masquerade at The Phone Company, checking out a girl in a tiger costume and flirting mercilessly. He reflects on the fact that he can now see veils, the portals time travelers use to get from place to place, and ripples, which are like “the same scene from a film on a loop, over and over, except it’s a person stuck in time and superimposed on the present.”
Once inside, he’s approached by Emerson, who berates him for drinking before the party. Michael does the same. Michael and Kaleb then discuss the rip that Kaleb saw earlier in the day, a group of uniformed soldiers posing on his front porch. When Michael gets too personal with Kaleb, Kaleb sees Tiger Girl on the dance floor and walks away. When Kaleb gets too personal with Tiger Girl, she smacks him across the face.
The masquerade is interrupted when Jack Landers, who’d been on the run for more than a month, shows up. He and Kaleb have words, and Jack takes aim at Kaleb with a firearm. He misses, and before he can try again, disappears.
The masquerade party is over. Michael, Emerson, and Kaleb discuss Landers, why he made an appearance, and what he could want. Kaleb believes he’s there for Emerson, so Emerson can help Jack achieve his desire of traveling to the past.
Kaleb’s father, Liam, arrives at The Phone Company and tells the group that everyone with the time gene can now see rips.
Kaleb expresses his dismay over the fact that everyone with the time gene can see rips. His father, Michael, and Dru’s brother, Thomas, go outside to have an “adult” conversation, leaving Kaleb and Emerson alone. Kaleb makes it clear to Emerson that he still has romantic feelings for her, while Emerson reiterates that Michael is the only guy for her.
Kaleb reflects on his feelings of jealousy toward Michael, not just because of Emerson, but because of Michael’s close relationship with Kaleb’s father. The conversation ends when a stranger appears inside a veil.
His name is Poe, and he has a message for the Hourglass. Certain choices by the Hourglass members, namely Emerson, have caused a compromise in the space-time continuum. When Emerson responds to the accusation sarcastically, Poe pulls her inside the veil. Kaleb tries to reach her but can’t get through the veil. Poe speakes of consequences for actions, and then slits Emerson’s throat.
Kaleb watches Emerson bleed to death.
He rages at Poe, his focus now shifting to making Poe pay. Before he can get to him, Poe issues an ultimatum. “If Jack is found, there’s a chance that everything that’s happening can be repaired. Then the Hourglass can choose the timeline on which it would like to continue,” and suggest he has the ability to rewind time. He later says, “There’s only one way to clean up the mess the Hourglass has made without consequences.”
Poe then asks Kaleb if he’ll deliver the message to find Jack Landers to the rest of the Hourglass. When Kaleb says yes, Poe rewinds time inside the veil and revives Emerson. After a brief mention of the name Teague, Poe leaves.
The Hourglass gathers for a meeting in Liam’s home office.
They discover that Teague is part of Chronos, a group previously referred to as “The Powers That Be.” Liam briefly explains his past with Teague and Chronos, and claims he will take care of the ultimatum, and that the message from Teague was meant for him. He also implies if he needs help, he can get it from Michael. This infuriates Kaleb.
Liam dismisses the group with one directive, someone must tell Ava that Jack is back. The task falls to Kaleb.]]>
