Em starts of the chapter thinking about time travel and saving the world, she wonders if she’s fallen into a “straight to DVD release” (p. 112). She works her shift at Murphy’s Law and let’s a remark slip to Lily about seeing people from the 1950s. Em distracts Lily as she pops a rip by making a comment that the cafe must have rats. Lily doesn’t entirely buy Em’s tiredness and weird comments.Lily and Em discuss Michael and they both decide that Em needs time to sort out her feelings about him. As Em is about to begin rolling dough, Lily hands her a rolling pin that makes Em wonder how Lily could have known the exact location of where she had thrown the pin earlier.
Lily and Em walk out of Murphy’s Law at the end of their shift, and they find Michael waiting for Em.
Quote: “Hey,” the breathless thing was happening again, but I didn’t care.
“Hey,” he replied. I wanted to put my hands on him as a test, to see if the connection existed on a busy street in the middle of the afternoon. I reached a finger out to boldly touch the curve below his smile.
He reached up to grab my arm. “Are you trying to get me fired? Or kill me?”
“You would be of no use to me dead.” Although I couldn’t breathe when he touched me, so I guess it all depended on who kicked the bucket first. He still held my wrist, and my whole arm was vibrating. (page 118, Hourglass)
Chapter 17
Michael gives Em two books, The Space Time Contiuum, Wormhole Theories and a thick three-ring binder full of notes, to read while he’s away for a few days. He warns her to not let the binder out of her sight and to read it first.
Em falls asleep during the drive and wakes up when Michael stops the car. They share a sweet moment before he lets her out of the car and pulls away.
Quote: “When will you be back?” I reached down to grab my backpack and the books he gave me. And to hide my flaming face.
“I can’t say for sure, but maybe by tomorrow. I hope you’re a fast reader.”
I opened the door. I needed to get out, needed to put some space between us. “Please. Faster than a speeding bullet. Even with the whole”–I twirled one finger in a circle beside my head, giving him the international sign for crazy–”thing, I was ranked in the top five of my junior class.” I shot out of the car door for emphasis. “Actually, top three.” (page 122, Hourglass)
